A Tribe in Baluchistan perform similar to a modern nation

Baluchistan is a tradition and tribal society. The modern Baluchistan cities inhabitants are divided between tribes and clan although their loyalties to the tribes are not as strong as the tribal Baluchistan, but when it comes to voting majority people in Baluchistan vote on tribal line.

A Tribe in Baluchistan perform similar to a modern nation. Tribesmen are loyal to their kinship and prepare to die in order to protect their kinship property and honours. An attack on a tribesman is the attacks on the whole tribe and it is a duty of the tribe to protect him regardless of power of Attacker. The Tribes in Baluchistan have a recognised homeland.

Tribe is an institution that unites and protects tribesman, tribesmen jealously guard their territory and their members, Tribesmen select their Sardar. Pakistan state has failed to provide security, justice, to individual, tribe under leadership of their sardars protect their property and right. In the modern cities where there are no tribal system criminal gang fill the gap businessmen and ordinary people relay on criminal gangs for protection. The state is powerless or unwilling to protect the citizen. Tradition conform Sardar legitimacy. If it is outdated tradition, that is a completely separate argument.

Every political and social organisation has its strength and weakness. We as Baluch will survive a modern epoch if we are to modernise, our institutions, traditions must be turned to modern culture. Tribal system has to be reformed from within, by the Baluch themselves. The tribal loyalties must be transformed to national and state loyalty; educated elites must create organizations that unites the Baluch tribes for the purpose of National Liberation.

The Baluch nation has a problem, that is the occupation of Baluchistan. The Liberation of Baluchistan acquires no ideologies. Nationalism is not politics of left or right, it is not a concept that arises in the course of struggle between monarchy, middle classes and working class in Baluchistan, it is a result of occupation and has been considered the duty of every Baluch to liberate itself from the yoke of occupation. Every Baluch has been violated and humiliated equally regardless of its class and status.

Any Baluch with the courage and capacity to take advice from many and to be brave to take correct decision is qualified to lead the nation to national liberation, it is less important from which class or tribe he or she belong. Baluch Masses know their interest, what masses need an organisation to combine many well in to the single will that is the liberation of Baluchistan. Whoever stands on the ways of unity, under any pretext is not a patriot. No nation can ever liberate itself without universal national organisation and unified leadership.

It has been said that the Baluch educated elites and middle classes have a genuine complaint against Sardars, yes a lot of us have a complaint against sardars and tribal system in my opinion it is an outdated system must be reformed and updated, most sardars are stooge of central Government. They are working against Baluch interests. A sardar as a leader shouldn’t be a problem as long as Sardari is not criteria for leadership.

I believe to abolish the tribal system completely would be mistake, by weakening the tribal institution religious institutions will be a sole winner; every Sardar will be replaced by a Mulla. Secondly Pakistan has imposed war on Baluch, no nation can reform its institution when that nation is under attack by it enemy. Therefore reform can wait.

Some believe Sardar’s and other have egoism against each other and against newly rising educated elites, but these are solely Baluch’s problem must be debated in civilised manner.

Some groups have systematically targeted a Sardar and his family, to other he is symbol of liberation. In my opinion he has scarificed Blood and treasure for liberation of mother land. Everyone has a right to disagree, but no one has the right to distort the fact.

However Baluch must not be satisfied by past achievement, the life is imperfection constant struggle for perfection; Baluch must struggle for ultimate perfection of national liberation.

Baluchistan liberation cause must rise above the tribal and grievance of the past. It is not the time to polarise the tribes and nation, it is the time for removing threat from a tribe against tribe, sub-tribe. Nationalism in Baluchistan is a progressive movement against colonials’ power; it must unite all Baluch against the colonials’ power.
