reserves in Kohlu, Dera Bugti: ''government ready to put into effect Alaska Formula''

If Nawab Khair Bux Marri or any other tribal chieftain can prove his/her ownership of land situated in Kohlu area of Balochistan he would be within his rights under the law to arrange investment for exploration of oil and gas and the government of Pakistan would purchase this oil and gas, Malik added. To deal with the energy crisis on long-term basis, the government should consider starting exploration and development work in Kohlu, Balochistan, where rough estimates put natural gas reserves at over 22 trillion cubic feet (TCF). Pakistan currently has total proven reserves of about 27 TCF, while tight and other low-BTU gas resources account for 51 TCF.

He said that currently PPL was working on 37 blocks across the country of which 16 blocks are in Sindh, nine in Balochistan, four in Punjab, three in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, three off-shore ones and two international blocks. An official of Petroleum Ministry told this correspondent that the Prime Minter''s Advisor on Petroleum Dr Asim Hussain had asked Oil and Gas Company Limited (OGDCL) Managing Director Masood Siddiqui to hold discussions with relevant Baloch leaders on issues relating to rentals, compensation and community service responsibilities before proper security arrangements could be put in place to move technical staff, rigs and machinery into the Kohlu block. "In this connection, a few meetings has already been held," the official added.
